The news service quoted an official of the Election Commission as saying that the elections were "extremely satisfactory and incident-free".

　　Deputy Election Commissioner R. Balakrishnan said the turnout figures were tentative and there could be small changes, while praising "the tremendous job done by polling and security personnel," according to the report.

　　In relatively few incidences of violence, two people were injured in attacks by extreme left-wing rebels in the central state of Jhark and during the poll on Thursday, according to local media reports.

　　In the first phase of the elections held on April 16, extreme left-wing rebels killed at least 19 people, mainly paramilitary forces and policemen, in attacks upon polling stations.

　　The turnout rate in the first phase of the pollings was 57 percent, according to official estimates.

　　India is electing 543 members of the lower house of parliament, or Lok Sabha, in one of the longest pollings in the world which will be completed by mid-May.
