In Dehong prefecture, the water and the grass are rich, which is suitable to develop the herd. Since the ancient times, the herd industry has been an important part of the agriculture in Dehong prefecture. In the region, people all over the nationalities have had the tradition that they raise the domestic animals. They cultivate some brands such as Dehong buffalo, Dehong pig, Dehong ox and so on, and they take the herd industry as a symbol of the wealth. Before the liberation, because of the limitation of the conditions, the herd industry developed at a low level. In 1950, all over the prefecture there were more than 70,000 heads of the large domestic animals, 110,000 heads of pig and sheep. The animal epidemic disease wreaked havoc, the herd to plough was lack, and the meet for people was extremely tight.

　　After the People's Republic of China had been established, the herd industry had the considerable development. In 1952, the prefecture had 90,500 heads of large domestic animals in the bar; the number of the pigs in the bar was 108,300 heads and the number of the pigs out of the bar was 14,000 heads; the number of the sheep in the bar was 35,200 heads, and the number of the sheep in the bar was 15,800 heads; the total output of the herd industry was 3,420,000 Yuan (according to the market price), which took 11.10% in the whole total output of the agriculture. After the reform and opening policy in 1978, the veterinarian technical personnel in the prefecture emancipated the mind, looked for the facts, took the science and the technology as a lead, worked solidly, improved the “eight changes” synthesis necessary technology of raising pig in the prefecture and changed the traditional raising mode, as a result, the number of the pig in the bar was added, and the herd industry had a rapidly development. In 1989, all over the prefecture the number of the large domestic animals was 264,100 heads; the number of pig in the bar was 490,900 heads, and the number of pig out of the bar was 147,500 heads, the total output of the meat, milk and egg was 1,379.23 tons; the total value of the herd industry was 96,840,000 Yuan, which took 21.99% in the whole total value of the agriculture.

　　From July, 1997 to December, 2003, the Chinese-European Union water buffalo development project implemented successfully in Dehong, which benefit to 4996 household directly. Because of the advancement, science and suitability of the project, the social efficiency and the ecological efficiency of the project are remarkable, and the project reversed the tendency that Dehong buffalo and ox degenerated, and improved the development of the beef-processing and the buffalo dairy products processing, as a result, Dehong prefecture formed its characteristic industry of the herd.

　　In 2005, the total product value of the herd industry in Dehong was 541,760,000 Yuan, which accounted for 19.92% of the total product value of the agriculture. The large domestic animals were 195,500 heads, in which the buffalo and the ox in the bar were 178,200 heads, and that out of the bar were 26,300 heads; the pigs in the bar were 580,500 heads, and that out of the bar were 396,200 heads; the sheep in the bar were 82,900 heads, and that out of the bar 31,200 heads; the number of the domestic fowls in the bar were 2,106,800; the total output of the meat was 44,900 tons; the output of the milk was 1,215 tons, and it realized that the buffalo milk became a industry; the output of the eggs of the fowl was 1,655 tons. The prefecture owned 12 leading enterprise of the herd industry and more than 5,000 households of the model household and the scale raising household.
